It has not been withdrawn from the market due to technical faults, and is still available to our customers going in to 2014. Draeger are always reviewing our technology platforms to see if we can make enhancements for improvement to patient outcome and user interaction.
As part of this review and the length of time the JM-103 has been in the market, Draeger launched the JM-105 at the end of last year. As you have correctly pointed out, the screening algorithm technology is the same as the JM-103 which is tried and tested and helped to form the NICE guidelines. Strange for a device launched 12 months ago. We found it to be imprecise and inaccurate in both reading modes. I believe you cannot use the device on babies receiving UV light therapy. You can with other devices. As this device is to be used by community midwifery the reproducibility of results is essentail to avoid missing cases of jaundice in babies who need to come back in to hospital. I would rather have a device that overestimates the bilirubin than underestimates it for this reason.

We looked at the Draeger JM103 which we found to be 'not fit for purpose'. It has now been withdrawn from the market with a new version JM105 being released in 2014. Now looking at the Philips device. Trial going well at the moment. The device has not been used in the community yet but that is the intention.
